They use the infrared emission effect from any object that has a temperature different from the temperature of absolute zero. Their structure uses the special semiconductor detector which in combination with the appropriate optical system has the ability to record the changes of the infrared radiation intensity in relation to the background temperature.

Thanks to the proper analysis of this signal passive infrared detectors can detect a person moving within their operating range.
